Happy February, fellow replers! It's been a long time since I was able to post since I've been extremely busy lately. A lot of cool stuff have been shipped in the last few weeks, and a lot of awesome things have been happening!
Here are some of the coolest launches in these past few weeks.
Users across the world often experience slower speeds when using Replit, since all machines are based in San Francisco. Luckiliy, the team shipped a Replit India, which enables everyone in the world to experience Replit running at its fastest.
All you have to do to start usign the India cluster is go to your account settings and switch your server location. Unsure which one works better for you? Try switching between them and comparing speeds.
Git in the shell
Before this change was shipped, using git in the shell was a terrible experience on Replit. You had to paste your access token in almost every time you ran a git command. Luckily,Ryan shipped a change which allows you to use git seamlessly in the shell. All you have to do is allow Replit to access your git credentials once, and you're all good to go!
(if you can't see the image, try https://replit-docs-images.util.repl.co/updates/git.gif)
Bounties Page Redesign
Take a look at how nice the Bounties page page looks now! Give a shout-out to @Bookie0 for helping to redesign it and make it look awesome!
Replit Rep Cohort V2
The second handful of Replit Reps have been recruited, some of who are @RayhanADev, @Hugo, @Oli, and some others. Pay attention to the Replit Discord for updates on events they'll host!
First off, I've been trying to get in to DevRel a little more lately, so you'll see me a lot more active on Twitter. If you enjoy programming questions, short tutorials, and polls, consider following me and you'll get a ton of content on a daily basis.
Another thing I've taken up is writing the Replit Changelog and writing a lot of documentation. I essentially do the same thing in the changelog as in my blog, but I tend to post some other stuff and update my blog more often. I also started doing video recording and making animated GIF tutorials in the docs as well. See if you can find any!
If you're a fan of AI, try checking out Midjourney. I recently stumbled across it and figured out that it generates images better than Stable Diffusion and Dalle. I believe @TechLionDev used it to generate some prototype of his profile picture, which looks amazing.
If you enjoy surprises, check out this repl I made by using a bit of graphql ;)
And now to collect
personalinformation from everyone!
- Describe Java in three words (rant all you want, it's nasty!)
- Have you made any friends on Replit directly? How has community activity benefitted you?
- What is your favorite Replit theme?
- What project do you want to build, but never had the time?
That being said, farewell everyone! Catch y'all next time!IroncladDev18 days ago
As you all know, it has been a long time since I've posted. I'd been at my first businees trip with Replit, and it was amazing! Before we dive into today's post, be sure to join the Replit Townhall on youtube this afternoon from 2:00-3:00PM PST. Amjad will be speaking there, and so will Sergei, the main engineer who built themes! On top of that, you'll learn more about new AI tools, the change to replit's Hacker Plan, and upcoming features!
Hack Week is a yearly hackathon in which all full-time Replit employees pitch an idea, team up, and start building. In this years' hack week, I came up with [REDACTED] and built it with @Bookie0 and @Vandesm14. Look forward to it this year, we're not sure when it'll be launched, but it will make it soon.
Everyone went to the Nona Wave Hotel in Orlando, where all the coding took place. In other words, we basically took over the entire hotel for a week 😂.
It was amazing getting to meet everyone in person! Aside from hacking, we went to some cool places together, talked about cool stuff (mostly programming), and got to know each other a lot better.
Although a large chunk of the Replit team act and think like computers in some ways, a lot of people are outrageously hilarious! Here are some funny highlights at Hack Week that kept me convulsing in laughter.
1. Mic drop
Mentioned in another post, @SergeiChestakov is the guy who almost singlehandedly built themes. An interesting fact about him is that he loves to use microphones. Occasionally he'd pick up the microphone and say something funny, or just "hello".
When the team was outside eating dinner, there was a stereo set up with two microphones so that Amjad could make an announcement.
Sergei picked up the microphone and asked what everyone thought about airplane food. After a few silly remarks and a few fights for the microphone with @jesse, @Bardia, and a few others, @jesse sneaked over to the microphone receiver and turned it off.
A couple of hours later, I told Sergei what happened with the microphone. You can guess what happened to Jesse next 🤸♂️🥊 (just kidding).
2. Google Sheet Vandalism
We originally had a google sheet that was our schedule for what everyone would be demoing. It was a classic sheet, black text and a white background. Nothing exactly interesting.
Two people started playing tic-tac-toe in the google sheet's rows and columns, two more people started playing chess with emojis, and small things here and there.
Everything was still relatively smooth until Sergei uploaded a picture of @AllAwesome497. After that, things went chaotic.
Everyone was in the large conference room and some people were using a projector attached to their computers to show the projects they built. I was struggling to not burst out in laughter at the state of the google sheet, and this is why:
Remnants of the chess game
And we got big buff bubbas in there too
I swear this was inspired by @d31337's "Hurts the eyes" theme.
Here are some features that have been launched recently!
In the Tools section on your repl, you should now see a cute elephant icon if you're an explorer. You can get a database capable of storing ten gigabytes of data for 100 cycles a day.
Replit's Hacker Plan will soon only support one always-on repl instead of five starting in April. Although this may sound devastating, there is a bright side to this.
- Editing Experience - Hacker plan users will now get 2GB of CPU and RAM on their repls when actively coding in the workspace so that there won't be as many resource overflows and slow LSP.
- Vertical Scalability - You can now hyperboost your repl to 32x its original speed and power, a maximum of 16vCPU and 16GB of RAM.
- What are your opinions on AI? Do you think it'll take over humanity today?
- What is one feature you think will massively improve the Replit Community?
- How is the current bounty hunting experience for you? How do you think it can be improved?
Farewell everyone! I will see y'all at the townhall today! Catch y'all next time!IroncladDev1 month ago
Happy 2023, everyone! It's been a long and productive year for Replit and for me as well. We are planning on shipping a ton more features this year and making replit reliable for hosting large applications.
My yearly breakdown
It has been a huge year for me. Here are some of the things I've gone through and accomplished:
Jan - March 2022
- Learned Next.js + React
- Started college at https://uopeople.edu
- Started making a ton of cool content on replit & doing some "free freelance" work
April - May 2022
June - July 2022
- Was a mentor in replit's Kajam competition, developed Tarragon with @haroon, @bddy, and @lajbel
- Tried to apply to work at replit a second time by sending an email to @amasad. The engineering team didn't have the capacity to mentor me since they were busy shipping and improving replit at a massive scale.
- Trust and Safety was rising to a higher and more sophisticated level with new tools
August - November 2022
- Applied for the Support Engineer position and made it to work at replit!
- Identified a massive spam attack in October, worked together with @akac and @qirtaiba and got them smashed down
- Released an even more powerful moderation dashboard
- Took off building on replit and added the comment jumping feature + some others
- Got a grip of how Replit's code looked like and learned how to do some more complex stuff
- Built some useful tools for the support team
- Migrated some of the support load to the ask forum
- Replit focuses on power and cycles, shipping faster than ever before
- Replit hits its $100K yearly revenue goal on Dec 30th!
Taking a look back at January, I never would have guessed I'd be here now. This year, I want to accelerate in Engineering and learn more advanced coding so I can build more stuff and help ship new features!
The tipping leaderboard has been released! You can now see the top 25 global tippers on replit!
You can now edit your bounties if you've made a typo! The long-awaited feature has finally landed!
Instead of toggling only between light and dark, you can now switch themes from the sidebar directly!
Instead of only a single boost, you will soon be able to boost your repl up to 32x faster! I've mentioned this before in another post, but the UI has drastically improved!
Welcome @bddy, @haroon, and @zplusfour to the moderation team! We got six extra eyes on the community to take care of content that is prohibited.
Discord hit 20K members!
Not necessarily something on the replit site, but the replit discord server just hit 20,000 members and is still growing at a rapid rate!
- I am going to be in Orlando from the 8th to the 14th of January to join the Replit Team at my first business meetup. So excited to meet everyone in person!
- I've been redesigning my website. Take a sneak peek if you want!
- If you were wondering how I got the domain, I bought repl.page. (btw I won't be handing out any subdomains - replit might do something with cycles and domains in the future!)
- What are your new year resolutions? What is something you want to accomplish this year that falls under the category of programming?
- What is something cool you think replit will release this year?
- What social media platforms do you use most?
- What do you see as the greater? Improvements to Replit's Community or improvements to Power and Reliability?
And that is it for today! Catch y'all next time!sonicx1801 month ago
Question about the replit mobile app. Can't everyone (the replit web dev team ig) work on the app, cause it's made in react native?IroncladDev2 months ago
Dec 22nd, 2022
This past week has been a huge shipping week for replit. Lots of cool stuff landed and lots of cool things have landed for beta/staff users.
The first and most obvious update that everyone has been waiting for is the Theme Explorer 🎨 page! After many years 🕰 of requests, replit's most requested feature finally broke through ☄ and made it to all users!
Give it away to @theflowingsky, @SergeiChestakov, and @eddieatreplit for grinding ⚙️🛠 on themes for months!
Check out the amazing launch video 📺 on twitter and share your favorites in the thread below 👇 ✨
SSH allows you to connect to your repl from your local machine 💻. This means you can code on your favorite editor 👨💻 on your device and watch as your code changes sync to replit almost instantly ⚡️!
This feature is still in super beta mode and is only out to replit staff and some beta testers. Keep a keen eye 👀 out for this feature!
Postgres Database Hosting 🐘 is in the works 👷♂️! Get 2GB of storage for an amount of cycles 🌀 (TBD) and you can store and manage data 📈 directly from your repl and make crazy cool stuff with it!
Deployments are also being actively developed! You will soon be able to separate the development 🛠 and production 🔥 environment in your repl and also provide your production app with tons of resources. Say goodbye 👋 to your repls going offline 😴 once this gets shipped 🚢!
Ghostwriter Chat is a ChatGPT-similar 💬 program that can be accessed from the workspace! The data/ai team is working hard on fine-tuning 💪 Ghostwriter 👻 chat so that it provides accurate code results and stops refusing to respond.
Keep your eyes open 👁👁, you're not going to want to miss this!
The New Support Flow is something I've been working on for the past few months. To report a bug 🪲, get help using replit 🙋♂️, or make a feature request, we're now using the Ask Forum.
If you're an explorer 🧭 on replit, you will now see a new Get Help button that replaces the old "Contact Support", "Report a Bug", and "Request a Feature" buttons.
Clicking the Get Help option will open an interactive guide that will address and help users to work around issues they are having trouble with.
After more than 1000 Lines of CSS 👨🎨🎨, I finally was able to restyle the ask forum to look more like replit 🪦. There is a replit dark mode 🌜 theme, a replit light mode ☀️💀 theme (not recommended), and the default one everyone's been using.
The first thing I'd like to mention is that I will not be working next Monday, Tuesday, and Wednsday 🛌. I'll be focusing on moderation tools 🛠 and redesigning my website 🖌. I've decided to keep my original logo and just make my website look better and keep its information up-to-date.
Another thing I'd like to mention is that I'll try to spread 🧈 my blog across twitter 🦃, dev.to, and discord 💬 rather than just centralizing ⭕️ around replit. DevRel is really awesome and I would definitely like to bite 🦷 into it a bit more.
Finally, I'll be quite inactive in the community from Jan 8th-14th. I'll be going to Orlando 🐭 to meet up with the entire replit team for the first time in real life ✨! Hack Week 👩💻👨💻 (team meetup) occurs twice a year in replit and is basically an in-company hackathon where certain teams compete to make cool ideas of theirs. Many ideas such as Extensions, Themes, and Site-Wide Search 🔍 originated from hack week ideas.
I will definitely update y'all about how it was there. Stay tuned 🎵!
- What is your favorite theme on the marketplace?
- What is your favorite project trending on community right now and why?
- How many hours do you code a week? If you had as much time as you wanted, how many hours would you code each week?
And with that, today's blog post is complete. Farewell everyone, and have a Merry Christmas 🎄🎅 🎁!
PS: Thanks, @Icemastereric for the 200 cycle tip on my blog! ^_^IroncladDev2 months ago
It is halfway through December! Two more weeks and this year's gonna end! Within this past week there've been some really cool stuff in replit.
Last week, one person participated in my AMA, and that person is @d31337 who just got tipped 500 cycles.
Me: Why do you use replit? Are you active on any other platforms?
d31337: Because it's a great platform to host code on. Not really.
Me: What is your preferred programming stack and why?
d31337: MERN ig. React is cool.
Me: What level of programming do you see yourself at in three years?
d31337: OMEGA Legend diamond class. Jk, by then all the code will probably be written by an app on people's phones.
Me: How do you explain the concept of programming to people who have no experience in it?
d31337: It's a way to describe to computers what specifically you want them to do.
Me: What feature were you most happy about that has been released this year? Why were you looking forward to it?
d31337: Bounties. They are one of Replit's best features. Yeah, I was sort of looking forward to it, but tbh I didn't expect it to be so big. I thought it would just kinda fade away, with the occasional $10 bounty being posted. But no, there is tons of good stuff in there.
<◇◇==Replit News & Updates==◇◇>
@haroon and @bddy just became site moderators on Replit today! They have been very valuable members to the replit community and now have been given the opportunity to shine some more! Keep an eye out for some cool projects from them!
The ask forum is the new place to report bugs, request features, and get help with replit. The support team is migrating away from direct contact to letting the community help out as well. Give a shoutout to @Vandesm14 who is working hard on authentication and linking accounts to the ask forum.
The replit mobile app is now supported for tablets/ipads and also support landscape mode. This was one of the most requested features when the mobile app came out with hundreds of requests flooding into the support inbox every few days. Huge shoutout to @replitlaima, @MCChen, and @inkRepl for their dedicated work on the mobile app!
The infinity drive for repls is very close to hitting the surface and is looking crazy cool! Not only will repls be able to store exabytes of data, but repls will load dozens of times faster as well. Of course this massive amount of storage for repls will be a paid product, but it will definitely improve the abilities of creators across the platform. Thanks to @ZachAtReplit for being the main engineer to work on this!
SSH for repls are in super beta mode but are in the works! @amasad recently announced in his tweet that some users could be able to beta test it! Drop your username in the tweet if you want to try it out!
Discord Bots will soon be able to be hosted reliably on replit. We are currently working on fixing these heavy ratelimits so that creators can have more power and abilities! @lhchavez has been working tirelessly on this. Be sure to give him your gratitude when it gets released! The release date is unknown, but it's coming soon.
Theme discovery and browsing is in the works! You will soon be able to browse new themes created by people and install them! Here's a small gif I got of what's been built so far. Give a huge thanks to @SergeiChestakov and @theflowingsky for building, designing, and working on replit's most-requested feature!
<◇◇==Personal Updates==◇◇> Mostly what I've been working on this week has been the docs. Have you noticed anything different with the replit docs? If so, comment the differences below!
Another thing I've built and implemented is the status integration with status.replit.com. If you open the help button from the sidebar or workspace, you will see an indicator that says whether replit is all good to go or if there is a current incident.
Finally, I have redesigned the flow for getting help/contacting support on replit. You can see this at https://replit.com/support, and pretty soon, you will see it in the in-app form.
- How would you describe replit in only three words?
- Have you used ChatGPT before? How does it impact you and others as a programmer?
- Do you really think AI will take over the jobs of programmers? Explain why/why not.
- Not really a question, but if you want, post some funny poems about ChatGPT in the thread below along with your questions.
That being said, I will see you all next time in my next post. Have a Merry Christmas and enjoy your week.
Oh and btw here's a noice christmas song: https://open.spotify.com/track/3YEWbvt2IfS2yPdjkJM1hR?si=d0a6c4a69f924008
