Personally i made an RPG for my first BIG project, i had made smaller things before like a timer or a simple menu system but it is relatively straightforward if you put your mind to it, late at night with a coffee, PJ's on with some lofi, ooooh the good times

they are hard to make. But read tutorials on them. You may get the hang of it.

To make an RPG requires lots of effort and work. I would personally suggest not coding a RPG as your first game, however, if you do, here are some tips and steps:

  • Read tutorials on PL's you want to learn.
  • After you're done, try coding basic project(warmups)
  • Start looking at RPG references on repl.it or other web
  • Start coding with a lang!

Note: I would suggest using a PL that uses the console for its work, like python or C++ :D

It really depends on what you are using.
Coding an RPG raw works better with Unreal Engine and other tools like Unity. I do not suggest and RPG as your first game. Try something like a small FPS, but do not skip ahead too early. Again, smart tools to use are Unreal Engine and Unity. They are both free. After you use them, you can go from there. I hope I helped. Have a wonderful day!

Protip from someone who has made the mistake: don't start with an RPG. I repeat, DON'T START WITH AN RPG. I did, and it failed, and it's 3 years I can't get back.

Start off much smaller, then make the RPG when your skills are good enough.

@SixBeeps

  1. how did you waste 3 years on an rpg

  2. how do you get "smaller" than an rpg

RPG games get big real quick, especially if you have as big of a story and an equally as large of an ambition as I did.

well theres something called not using 500 nested if statements and rpg's will be easy. Honestly rpgs are probably the most basic game you can make

I think text adventures take the cake when it comes to easiest thing possible.

Just wanna point out, my RPG wasn't text based, and barely had any nested ifs. But, my engine had a bad structure, and it's something I didn't fully realize until I got gud.
