CODE JAM #10

Hello, there replers! This announcement marks the beginning of our 10th community code jam. Again, the winner of the jam will be awarded 1 month of hacker plan along with (for those who use discord) a special role on our Discord server and a custom emoji of their choice added there!

The jam will end exactly 2 days from when this announcement was made. Any later changes will not be taken into account while judging.

THE THEME

Finally, as to what everyone has been waiting for, the theme of this jam is HELP WITH CODING. Make something that helps others code, learn how to code, motivates them to code, anything that helps with coding directly!

Note that your programs will be judged from a user's perspective so there are no restrictions as to what you can and cannot use in your submissions. However, you cannot build over an old project, it has to be a fresh start. You can still use code snippets for small parts of the project, use any libraries you want to.

HOW TO SUBMIT

You don't! As long as you've registered for the jam by filling out the Google form linked in the last post about this jam, all you have to do is code.

If you want to switch to a different programming language for your submission. First, note down the name of the repl that you've submitted. Then, create a new repl based on your preferred language, and lastly, rename the repl to the initially submitted repl's name.

A better way to deal with the issue is to create a .replit file and modify the run button, click here to learn more about this.

THE END. Good luck and have fun replers!

I petition @amasad to enter Repl.it to the code jam

BrokenKeyboard (36)

@ amasad omg he actually joined

amasad (3353)

@Codemonkey51 haha. No I'm excited to make something with auth, db, and all the new stuff we made but I never really got to use.

Codemonkey51 (1049)

Can't wait to see your submission! Also replit is amazing @amasad

DynamicSquid (4626)

@rediar dude, +1 for getting amasad to join lol

rediar (507)

My methods shall not be revealed. But it is thanksgiving, and I am feeling generous, so let me give you a couple hints. Here they are: plastic explosives, a partridge in a pear tree, egg rolls, and a towel.

[deleted]

@amasad
How did you begin the coding for replit I mean, which latform did you use? And how did it become so popular?

rediar (507)

@TheDrone7 I'm sure you'll figure it out someday...

TheDrone7 (1764)

That might've been enough clues for me @rediar.

amasad (3353)

@Whippingdot All cool replit developers are my friends

amasad (3353)

@dhruvkumarrajan The project has a long history. I've talked about it in a few podcasts that you can find on your favorite podcast app, just search my name.

Whippingdot (552)

Ok, sry for @ mentioning you though. And do you actually have your own podcast, let me search it up. @amasad

amasad (3353)

@Whippingdot not my own podcast. Just been a guest at other people's podcast. You can also search youtube.

Whippingdot (552)

Ok, thanks for making repl.it! I joined over a month ago but I LOVE it so far. Oh, and @amasad, is there a way you can make #include <windows.h> in C++ available? It doesn't work rn

programmeruser (575)

@Whippingdot no, repl.it uses Linux, you'll have to use Windows to use windows.h.

Whippingdot (552)

Oh yeah, that is why it always says linux in the terminal. @programmeruser

ch1ck3n (1583)

i thought it was thanksgiving

RayhanADev (1955)

Good luck to everyone who joins and may the odds be ever in your favor.

@RayhanADev - Getting Hunger games vibes...

JaydenLiu1 (35)

I want to submit but it ended! No fair!

TsunamiOrSumth (555)

@JaydenLiu1 that sucks, the deadline was pretty tuff, lots of ppl didnt finish

Kookiez (386)

@JaydenLiu1 well you didn't have to post it, it's just your jam repl... and it seems completed?

Jackbaklava (38)

When will the results be announced?

JBloves27 (1715)

DONE :D Just finished!

TsunamiOrSumth (555)

why am i so confident if i know ill place last (○` 3′○)

DonkeyRide123 (7)

Do I have to finish it to win? Because 2 days is way too short for me.

TheDrone7 (1764)

@DonkeyRide123 yes and no. You can submit an incomplete project but for it to win against complete ones there has to be that level of goodness despite it being incomplete.

Kookiez (386)

@TheDrone7 so a question that's related to @DonkeyRide123's question:
So for example, you created a few tutorials, an editor, etc. But then you decided to create a login system. you weren't done with the login system when the jam ended, but will there be "points taken" because the login system wasn't finished?

TheDrone7 (1764)

@Kookiez there's no technical point reduction because there's no criteria. It's all about how true you stay to the theme or how much does your submission from a user's point of view is helpful.

DonkeyRide123 (7)

I already failed, I don't have enough time :(

SpicedSpices (297)

@DonkeyRide123 hey don't worry i just started a few hours ago as well, we still have 12 hours to finish our project and get it up and working, so we have some time

DonkeyRide123 (7)

@SpicedSpices yeah but, I cant make a website teaching all of the basics of Python in 12 hours.

SpicedSpices (297)

@DonkeyRide123 ah I understand your point, although I don't think anyone could have even made a website teaching the basics of Python in the given 2 days. Don't let yourself down, you still have a chance to participate :)

DonkeyRide123 (7)

@SpicedSpices I know, but then I'll have to wait another month for another code jam.

CodingCactus (4138)

@DonkeyRide123 i made https://how-to-python.codingcactus.repl.co in around 5 hours a while ago. It may seem impossible to start, but once you get into it and get into the flow, you realise that it isn't such a mammoth task after all. : )

DonkeyRide123 (7)

@CodingCactus Yup, you're definitely gonna win

DonkeyRide123 (7)

@CodingCactus What's the code for that? I promise you, I won't steal it, I just want to know how to make websites like how you did.

DonkeyRide123 (7)

@CodingCactus What I meant was what was the code for your website? I want to learn more about HTML

DonkeyRide123 (7)

@CodingCactus It says the site can't be reached

CodingCactus (4138)

@DonkeyRide123 btw the html is really bad, if i were to rewrite it now, I would do it pretty differently, as i did that when i first knew about html

DonkeyRide123 (7)

@CodingCactus well, the competition ends in 3 minutes, so I think I lost already. I'm not even close to finished

DonkeyRide123 (7)

@CodingCactus I'm bad at HTML too, its fine

DonkeyRide123 (7)

@CodingCactus Can you teach me how to make a website that looks like this?

DonkeyRide123 (7)

Don't you think 2 days is too short?

TheDrone7 (1764)

@DonkeyRide123 coming up with a plan that can be finished within 2 days is also a part of the challenge.

HarperframeInc (446)

How do you leave the jam?

programmeruser (575)

@HarperframeInc delete the repl that you submitted in the form.

Kookiez (386)

@programmeruser also get on the repl, i created the login and signup templates, do some backend magic because idk anything about backend.

DonkeyRide123 (7)

I wanted to switch to a different programming language on the repl I'm using called "My First Jam", so I made a new repl, named it "My First Jam", using the programming language I wanted to use but I'm still paranoid that it will use the original one because I already submitted the URL to the repl on the google forum.

TheDrone7 (1764)

@DonkeyRide123 Yes, you should be fine. Anyways, if you're feeling paranoid, you can just edit the form response.

TheDrone7 (1764)

@DonkeyRide123 oh and make sure that you deleted your old repl before renaming the new one to what the old one was named.

DonkeyRide123 (7)

@TheDrone7 If I rename it, will the old URL I put still direct to the same repl I renamed?

TheDrone7 (1764)

@DonkeyRide123 The URL to access the repl is always https://repl.it/@username/replname so if you rename your repl, the URL to access it also changes.

DonkeyRide123 (7)

@TheDrone7 Okay, thanks. Also, sorry if I ask too many questions. I've just been working on my repl for a couple hours, and I don't want my code for the Code Jam to just be blank lines just because I picked the wrong programming language.

TheDrone7 (1764)

@DonkeyRide123 It's all cool. After all, I'm getting paid for this xD.

DonkeyRide123 (7)

@TheDrone7 I think this is my final question, are there any 2nd or 3rd place prizes?

NoNameByProgram (198)

oh no why did i make a python repl

JBloves27 (1715)

oof, you can change it, i think @NoNameByProgram

rediar (507)

@NoNameByProgram Yes, you can. Read post carefully for instructions on how too.

DonkeyRide123 (7)

Just to make sure I changed my programming language, what repl am I
using for the Code Jam? Sorry, I just get paranoid sometimes.

rediar (507)

@DonkeyRide123 The new changed repl should have the same name.... so the url would be the same.

DonkeyRide123 (7)

@rediar But when I looked at it it didn't have the same url.

TheDrone7 (1764)

@DonkeyRide123 that's why you have to rename it to what your submitted repl was named.

DonkeyRide123 (7)

@TheDrone7 So does that mean I'm fine? Because I renamed my new repl to what the original one was.

DonkeyRide123 (7)

But I'll be sad when it ends, I'll have to wait another month for another Code Jam :(

RedPandaCode (25)

Bruh I wish I knew this because I could've jsut made a webpage!! Now I gotta do this in C#

rediar (507)

@RedPandaCode You can change your language :)
read the post for more info

RedPandaCode (25)

@rediar Ye I know. But I am not gonna change now! It was kind of meant to be like a joke.

Coder100 (16867)

btw jdog is no longer with us :(

JBloves27 (1715)

Umm, i kinda switched my mind, and i cant change the form, but could i work with a team? thx!

TheDrone7 (1764)

@JBYT27 you should be able to edit your responses. Make sure you are signed in with the right account and it should allow you to edit the response.

TsunamiOrSumth (555)

@JBYT27 i also changed my mind and left a team because everyone was dead, wait, is that allowed?

TsunamiOrSumth (555)

ok well @TheDrone7 I dont know if @RyanGardiner1 signed me up to the form or not, but when i saw the topic i thought that i could make it myself, therefore i left the team and filled in the form myself.

TheDrone7 (1764)

@TsunamiOrSumth yes it is! I decided to leave the forms open so people can make such changes.

RyanGardiner1 (139)

@TsunamiOrSumth Frgot to tell u, im doing a game jam, imma guit the coding jame.

Coder100 (16867)

did I just hear a pog?

objobj (2)

Random question does css you've made before count as a library/code snippet?
I assume it does because it's just looks

(I'm asking this way too late lol)

objobj (2)

@TheDrone7 ok, thanks for replying!
now I don't have to deal with any css lol
