Executive Summary

Helix Electric — one of the nation’s largest electrical contractors, with 3,600 employees and $1.2 billion in revenue — runs some of the most complex construction projects in the country. Their IT team had always defaulted to buying software rather than building it, but the gaps kept growing: niche, high-stakes processes that no existing product was built to solve. After adopting Replit as part of a broader AI push, Helix started publishing a suite of purpose-built apps that close those gaps — saving thousands of hours, catching compliance risk before it becomes costly, and giving their workforce tools that simply didn’t exist before.

“It’s opening doors that simply weren’t practical to walk through in the past.”

The Challenge

For a company designing and constructing hospitals, data centers, and stadiums across the country, coordinating and delivering these projects only grows more complicated as the buildings themselves become more complex. Enterprise software handles the big stuff — but it isn’t built for the specific, high-stakes workflows that live in the corners of a large organization.

“The current solutions we had in place — the more platform or enterprise-level ones — just didn’t address those gaps.”
Mark Mandarelli, CIO

The workarounds weren’t cutting it either. Inconsistent manual processes built on generic tools like Excel weren’t scalable — one team member might have a great process, but getting others up to speed was its own project. And chatbots didn’t provide the structure that critical business processes demand.

The goal: purpose-built apps for focused problems, fast.

Why Replit

Helix evaluated several options before landing on Replit. What stood out wasn’t just the product — it was what came built in.

“When we looked at other competitors, their toolset around security and access controls just wasn’t as evolved. Replit came natively with Okta support, which means we can deploy an app and control exactly who has access — plugging right into our existing setup.”
Nathan McWhorter, AI Business Analyst

For Mark, the partnership mattered just as much as the platform.

“Replit showed a keen interest in hearing our feedback and incorporating it quite rapidly — even throughout the sales and evaluation process.”
Mark Mandarelli, CIO

The result: a platform Helix could trust at scale, without having to build that foundation themselves.

What They Built

Schedule Extractor

Construction project schedules arrive as dense PDFs — sometimes 80 to 160 pages of line-by-line data that project teams rarely have time to fully read. Helix published a tool that processes an entire schedule in minutes, turning it into a searchable format where teams can ask questions, spot conflicts, and understand what’s coming up on their scope.

The difference is stark. One project manager told Nathan that his team spent 12–14 hours manually reviewing a single 160-page schedule update. The tool processed it in 6 minutes.

To date, Helix has processed over 500,000 individual schedule tasks with this tool.

LCP Auditor

Labor compliance is a high-stakes, time-consuming part of any large construction operation. Helix receives payroll reports from subcontractors and must check them against California’s labor regulations — a manual, hours-long process prone to error.

No tool on the market did this. So Helix built one.

“We believe we’re the first to fully automate a labor compliance rule engine. What used to take 4 to 8 hours to review a single project’s payroll can now be done near instantly.”
Nathan McWhorter, AI Business Analyst

The LCP Auditor has already processed over 22,000 hours of payroll data — more than $1 million in payroll audited — delivering an 85% efficiency gain over the previous manual process. Beyond time saved, it catches compliance issues before they become costly problems for Helix or their clients.

Work Instruction Creator

Capturing how work gets done at Helix had always been inconsistent — guides in different formats, disconnected from any shared system. The Work Instruction Creator lets any employee walk through a process on screen, narrate as they go, and have the tool automatically capture every step, take screenshots, and produce a publish-ready guide formatted to Helix’s standards.

Once published, it feeds directly into their internal knowledge base — and those documents get fed back into their AI tools, so each output becomes an input that makes the next tool smarter.

The Results

In the last 90 days alone, Helix’s Replit-built apps have been accessed over 4,000 times across the company. The time from idea to working app has compressed dramatically — Nathan and the other Replit developers can sometimes ship application features and updates within the same day as a feedback session.

“Working with Replit allows us to scale our efforts without necessarily scaling headcount. We’re a nimble team, and the goal is to maintain that — but have a bigger impact on the broader business.”
Nathan McWhorter, AI Business Analyst

For Mark, the value goes beyond any single metric.

“Some of the things Replit is helping us solve are things we simply didn’t do before. It’s not just about being faster at what we already do — it’s opening doors that weren’t practical to walk through in the past.”
Mark Mandarelli, CIO
“Replit makes building applications at work actually enjoyable. I look forward to seeing the reactions from people when I solve something that they didn’t think was possible.”
