Sign the Petition and Help us Unblock Replit!

Many schools have decided to start filtering out sites such as Replit which allows students to code in the browser. Some schools have called this site a "distraction" as students are choosing to learn computer science and programming as opposed to working on other subjects. This is a problem for many teachers who use Replit, as it takes away a vital educational tool. We're looking to get Replit unblocked in schools. Not only is it an educational tool, but it is helping to inspire young people to pursue computer science, which is a growing need in our advancing world. You all know how valuable Replit is, you are the power we need to get this problem solved once and for all.

You seem to have good intentions but I don't see how this would be effective in any way...
Let's be honest: Schools don't care if some random petition tells them to unblock Repl.it. If teachers of that school can't convince the IT dude to unblock repl.it, guess what, a petition mostly made out of people not in their school won't either.
The real solution is to have teachers and students in that school convince the school. Maybe a tool kit illustrating how useful Repl.it is or something.
Not to mention the petition mischaracterizes the reason for blocks. Most blocks are probably just 1. blanket blocks not targeted at repl.it specifically 2. IT people seeing lots of traffic there and blocking it, or 3. students using it in class when they shouldn't, not because they don't want students working on computer science

dude you make 100% good points, but there is good reason that schools block Replit. While it may be educational, Replit runs on servers that schools can't control. You know what other servers schools can't control... VPNs and just open up a python repl and launch a web browser you got an "unblocker" as people here call it. My school required some convincing (and calling a favor with the IT dude) to get Replit unblocked but they accept the risks of allowing too smart kids to abuse the platform and it;s intentions.

No, no they haven't. The rules are there to ensure children do not access inappropriate and distracting sites. You are not allowed to break rules just because you found a way to get around preventative measures to enforce those rules. I don't mean to be the annoying buzzkill, but you don't earn the leisure of breaking rules just because you found a way around a website blocker.

yeah but those arent really unblockers. they are just you viewing what happening on a vm. for it to be a real unblocker you should be able to access it from your machine and not from a vm.

@rediar
i see your standpoint. Having someone "petition" on repl to save repl from being blocked wouldnt actually do much. The fact is, your trying o convince your district, not repl itself. They will not care about what other people on the internet think, but more likely on what other people in your position. If you want it to be unblocked, just ask an administrator and give valid reasons why it would benifit you.

I can say for a fact that it's helping. We've been in touch with the IT providers that are blocking Replit and the fact that this is going semi-viral convinces them that this could be a potential public-relations issue.

We've also had reporters reach out asking about it. Great work

Have you been at a school in the last 10 years? Blocking websites only stop people who don't put in the absolute minimum effort. The real solution to stopping people accessing inappropriate/distracting sites is healthy conversations, an absence of censorship, and good teaching staff.

The kids who learned the languages and built up freedom from scratch deserve it. I wouldn't say that kids who look up "how to unblock a website using python" or something deserve it though. No work was put into that.

As someone who did build an unblocker from scratch though, my friends just copy and pasted stuff. I would say that even if they did build it from scratch, it still should be blocked.

True. But it legit only takes 2 lines of code to open a Chromium browser so you don't even have to build freedom for this 0-0
All ya gotta do is import webbot and then open a browser 2 lines boom

I am not at all saying that blocking websites actually does something. It is quite easy to navigate around those. I accessed blocked websites to play music when I was in school last year. This doesn't mean I wasn't breaking the rules. You can circumnavigate preventative measures, not the actual rules. Please read what I said again, as your reply is not relevant to my point. I do agree with your last sentence for the most part though.

@rediar
Also, the problem with "unblockers" and the chance that students can look at... inappropriate content. Since the browser is running on Repl.it servers, admins see no suspicious traffic, but they see Repl.it.
@AntimatterDev
- I know quite a few people in my school that use an "unblocker" on Repl.it, and it works pretty well.

When you translate a url, it shows the translated page, even if the page is blocked
It doesn't render some of the CSS or JavaScript content, though

@RowanFromBJC
well that's interesting, I didn't know that :D
also, if it doesn't render and CSS or JS, then it doesn't show styles probably doesn't make server calls, and likely won't load anything so you might as well view a Google cache of the site :?
