This project was created for the Repl game competition in 2018. It has since been discontinued. If I get enough requests to create it again, I will reopen it in another project, but otherwise it will unfortunately be closed.

**This game is designed for full screen using the editor display will cause the game to look out of proportion and discolored. Sorry if the proportions are off; everyone's monitor is different. There's nothing I can do to fix this...

This is a "rework" of the original "Oregon Trail" developed by Don Rawitsch, Bill Heinemann, Paul Dillenberger and MECC in 1971. It's not final yet, but it does have lots of work in it and will have much more in the future. The game is completely finished, and the full version was released on the 18th of April at 21:58 (9:58 PM) EST.

Keep in mind that this will not be an exact copy of Oregon Trail. There will be many elements, story lines and other parts that are very different than the original game, but there will also be many aspects intentionally put into the game to remember and, in some cases, mimic the original game.

This is my first-ever game that I've done on my own, so hopefully it's good. I would greatly appreciate any feedback you have on the game. Make sure to upvote and comment if you want to help me out and if you want to see this game improve

Background:
This game takes place in a alternate history world that is almost exactly like ours, except that there is a major threat to the travel to the West in the form of a powerful bandit group called the Pandora Group.

In this game, your choices matter.

Tip:
In order to enjoy the full story experience of the game, I would recommend talking to the townsfolk whenever possible.

Don't get too trigger-happy. Any key presses during scrolling text will be put in the next input section; that includes pressing the enter key.

Putting weird symbols or pressing backspace too many times may mess up the graphics, so unless you want a terminator-background, try not to hit your head on the keyboard.

At some points where a Yes or a No is required, text entries that are not one of the answer choices sometimes are counted as a no or the last answer choice. Beware of that when answering.

** Command list (Type these in before pressing enter on the "Press enter to start" prompt at the beginning)**

"hardmode" - Typing this in will increase the chances for a character to get sick, to allow for a more classic Oregon Trail feel.
"end" - This will skip to the end of the game, allowing you to skip all of the travelling time and start the game already at the Whitman Mission. This is especially useful for judging or bug testing
"skipintro" - self explanatory. Skips the intro (the title screen and startup colours) if you have already seen it

And of course, pressing enter normally will result in playing the game normally.

@KatyaDelaney For now. I'm working on it, and over the course of the month, it definitely will get much better and have more in it!
Right now I'm mostly working on errors and bug testing, so it may be a day or two until a content update happens

Red text with blue background (or vice versa) is notoriously hard to read.

The entire time I play this game, the soundtrack for Starkid's musical version of this game will be playing in my head. Whoops

Update 0.4.0 is out! This is the update that adds an actual story to the game (Not like the original Oregon Trail) as well as two new graphical elements; one that goes with each fort you arrive at. Try it, and tell me what you think!

@TristanBlair Thanks for the feedback. I also sometimes experience freezings of the program in what feels like random locations. I have no idea what's causing it, or if it's just a computer/website issue.

It's really fun!! I came across some errors: I bought wagon repairs but it said I had 0. My food was in the negatives. When I died, I could continue, with a death message showing each day, until i selected option 1, continue. Still I'm sure you're working on this. It's really cool and I like the colours. excited to see more

@AmeliaBlackwell Thanks for the feedback! I'm still working on the travelling part, so that should get fixed soon. It's difficult to find the bugs with only one person with not that much time, so it's always appreciated.

@Mavrick ahh nice! Yeah i relate, with the fishing game i eventually just went into the accounts file and manually changed the stats so i could get to the bit i needed to test

@rediar That happened because Repl edits after every edit I do. This has been fixed, and I will use a test server for future editing before putting the next release into the submitted program

I tried to buy medicine at the first stop and encountered a fatal error. I talked to the Indian man, then attempted to choose option 4. Error reads as follows:

it happened at the first stop. As soon as I reached it, I immediately used option "4" - "medicine".

Also, can you explain what does the option to rest for the day does while on trail? Maybe add it in the instructions/something.

And, all of my members fell sick quite early, however since we are never informed that the members can be treated only when at some stop point, I kept wasting a lot of resources with the option to "rest for the day", thinking that is what they need. I think you should convey that to the players before they start the journey! Also, how can we prevent the members from getting sick so easily? I had enough food and also 2 clothes per person!

It's really enjoyable but I came across a bug

The story has such an exciting feel and I really wanted to talk to the Indian man in Port Keany but the bug came up :( It said put in Y/N and I did and that happened

@AmeliaBlackwell Yeah, I'm working on those. Apparently my recent update that I did just literally killed every loop so I'm going to try to get my game working again. Thanks for the help, though.

@AmeliaBlackwell That would be great! I saw that you were going to have that "Fishing game tribute" in there as well, right? That graphic was pretty cute to have the title in.

It should be fixed now; I'm testing it myself, so hopefully it does work or it'll be even longer until I sleep...

@AmeliaBlackwell I literally found out how to do this on accident.

Here's an example of how to do the background:

from colorama import Fore , Back , Style # Imports colorama (You will only need back for this) from replit import clear as c # Imports the clear function as c print(Back.GREEN + "") # Sets the text background (not the console background) to green c() # Clears the console # This will then create a green background for the console. But occasionally typing in weird text like ^^A or backspacing too far will reset the current text background to normal and look weird. Also, if the text goes off the screen, the background will not follow it.

Hopefully that made sense. And remember, you saw it here first, folks!

Version 0.5.0 is out now! This adds a more user-friendly interface, as well as fixing lots of bugs and improving things that existed before. It also adds a new story element to the game: Check the "Changelog" tab for more information!
