Don't do it, Replit!
codingjlu (484)

This current state only applies to explorers.

The first time I saw Replit apps, I knew it wasn't going to be good.

For all explorers, you will now see that the trending is being replaced with the top Replit apps. And I don't like it. Not one bit.

Why not?

  • People can't vote on your posts
  • It's much harder to find good repls
  • No more long descriptions
  • It's not as organized
  • Trending projects stays on for too long
  • It's easier to plagarize
  • There's not that great triumph when your app goes trending

Anyways, although this is currently only for explorers, due to past experience, it will soon apply to everyone.

And that's very, very, very, bad.

Repl Talk is good. You don't have to mess it up.

If you agree, you can petition in the app I made just for this, and we can show it to Replit.
C'mon people.

Disclaimer: I'm not trying to offend anyone (Replit) and do not have bad intentions. But I do not support what Replit is doing with trending at all.

IMO this CSS is amaaaaaaaaaaaazing.

Tip: re-submit your entry to edit your petition.

We have succeeded!!!!!! Trending is share again!!

Hey everyone — thanks for the feedback. It’s really valuable. Apps should feel as good as Talk and even better when it comes to sharing repls. It shouldn’t be seen as a downgrade. If that’s not the case then we have more work to do. For now we’ll pause the roll out of the Apps trending feed until we address your most pressing concerns.

To be clear Replit is Replit, whether talk or apps it’s the same site. The reputation, profile, and friends you built on this site will be there for you regardless of the product updates.

Our mission is to make programming more accessible, fun, and social. We want our site to inspire creativity and be a healthy community where people come to learn and build. And we’ll continue to iterate to make it better and better for everyone.

codingjlu (484)

@amasad so you mean that you will pause your advance to overtake trending with apps?

codingjlu (484)

@amasad yay :) it was fun to make the app anyways.

QuantumCodes (26)

@codingjlu where is trending anyway? The place from where i found this post?

IMayBeMe (551)

@amasad this is why I love replit, it took you only a day to respond to a petition and it shows how much the company values its community’s opinion

codingjlu (484)

@QuantumCodes where did you find this [pst?

codingjlu (484)

@IMayBeMe yesssssss! (and also lots of ppl petitioned)

Whippingdot (681)

thanks? I don't know if I should say that cause you guys worked really hard for Apps, and the design is awesome...But yea...I guess so. I hope you improve it a ton - maybe not cycles, but at least updooting comments so that more people can see them. Apps specifically do not need to have an upvote feature, cause that will be the same as the trending page on repl talk. I like what you are doing with 'Replit's picks rn anyway cause lots of random awesome apps get picked there @amasad

AmazingMech2418 (1103)

@amasad I personally think a good way to improve Apps would be to make it more searchable and to allow it to have a system similar to upvoting so the best repls get more views and the simpler ones that aren't as significant get fewer views (since they are more likely for small-level sharing rather than all of Repl.it). There should also be ways for Repl.it-ers to promote repls shared on Apps, I think, so that lesser-known good repls get more views as well. And a way to view the newest repls like on Talk as well. Also, the description size limit should be longer, I think, as well. I like the "Replit Picks" section of Apps too, but there should also be ways for Repl.it-ers to suggest repls to be picked, I think.

amasad (3543)

@AmazingMech2418 all great suggestions.

I’m a bit worried about adding upvoting thought because of all the negative issues that come with it like farming and abuse. I think runs & forks together are more honest metrics because they indicate that something is truly useful or interesting. Don’t you think?

Will fix the description issue.

What do you mean by promote? Like pay to advertise?

AmazingMech2418 (1103)

@amasad Thank you!

I was thinking that there should be some way to show that you like the repl since view-based metrics could possibly lead to clickbait.

And by promote, I mean some way for something like a "recently liked repls" thing on the profile page, or some way for Repl.it-ers to almost "curate" repls themselves so that the repls are more visible.

amasad (3543)

@AmazingMech2418 yes likes will play into it. The algorithm will be a combination of all those metrics in a way that makes it hard to game any one aspect.

ah good idea re curation

codingjlu (484)

@amasad nice! I can't wait till it's improved!

JeffreyChen13 (59)

@amasad I didn't really get the founding of Replit Apps; why do we need it? I thought Replit Talk would be a place to share, comment, and upvote repls. Wouldn't Apps just be the same thing?

amasad (3543)

@JeffreyChen13 I think they serve subtly different functions. Repl talk was modeled after Reddit — it’s centered around discussions and words. Whereas apps is around software and sharing.

JeffreyChen13 (59)

@amasad You make a good point there, but the thing I do not get is that they all have a main target: sharing code, which is exactly why I'm wondering why we have two identical places to share repls and code. It would be confusing.

amasad (3543)

@JeffreyChen13 you’re right. Right now it’s confusing. We’re trying to get to a better spot soon. Thanks for bearing with us.

JeffreyChen13 (59)

@amasad Thanks, too for understanding.

codingjlu (484)

@JeffreyChen13 maybe a separate platform just for software?

plscodeinjava (391)

@amasad i honestly would much rather have upvoting, and i think most of the repl community agrees with me on this one. it just feels so good to get upvotes, when runs don't really tell if someone actually likes the game.
how would forks be a metric?
I personally would like apps MUCH MORE if they had some form of upvoting, and honestly, getting upvotes is the big reason i keep making new games...

ruiwenge2 (1209)

@amasad Can Replit add a feature in the CLI to change the language of a repl? That would be very useful.

codingjlu (484)

@ruiwenge2 lol why'd you ask him here xDD

amasad (3543)

@plscodeinjava thanks; will take this into account!

amasad (3543)

@ruiwenge2 you can do it using the .replit file. There is a language field. Check the docs

ruiwenge2 (1209)

when i tried to change the language of a python repl to html it didnt work. Some people have already told me about it.
Also thanks for replying @amasad

ruiwenge2 (1209)

@amasad also a following system would be great. Like when a user makes a post, the people that follow them would get notifs

ch1ck3n (2388)

@amasad > Like pay to advertise?

no

ch1ck3n (2388)

@amasad just make it so that a person can only give out so much upvotes every day

amasad (3543)

@ch1ck3n cool idea. “Accolades”

ebp11 (42)

@amasad Could Repl Talk Share be replaced with Apps (it should go back to Explore in my opinion) but have all of the same features? I mean the exact markdown thing, the ability to change the published announcement title from the repl, search capability without special commands, an A-Z alphabetical tag browsing list that loads all at once without the tap of a button, and a way to revert to the classic Repl.it Talk Share interface. There should also be some sort of way to view old classic Repl.it Talk Share posts without migrating. (a sort of "compatibility mode")

programmeruser (615)

@amasad runs and forks are even more abusable. Just create a script

amasad (3543)

@programmeruser nothing is perfect but we want to find something that is a better metric representing usefulness.

LaneMartin (108)

@Whippingdot uhh ur cycles number is looking kinda sus

ch1ck3n (2388)

@amasad maybe only let the apps be trending for a 1-3 days and then let other repls be trending

Whippingdot (681)

that is wut i was gonna say lol @LaneMartin

Whippingdot (681)

I think what ch1ck3n said about the amount of upvotes is a cool idea...but not really perfect. I would be happier without upvotes, and I am happy you also think that too. I do like cycles though unfortunately and so I hope you can implement some way to still get cycles through your apps and not only through ask when you replace repl talk... @amasad

Also @AmazingMech2418 really good ideas bro. You haven't been active recently and I am glad that you are still striving to help the community... I like all the suggestions in your post. There should be someway for the community to choose which apps should be shown on the front page too. So like trending, but not only will those good apps be there, but new apps should also be there, like maybe a random 2.

Also @amasad I don't remember the link of the app that I commented on with my feature requests that you replied to, but if you have the link can you send it? You probably won't so the only thing I remember @AmazingMech2418 is that I asked for a search capability with the tags and he said they were already working on it. I asked if you could like search through the apps and search with the tags and combine tags etc. I also asked if you could filter a tag by the apps released 'today', 'this week', and 'trending' or something else... He said they were working on this / would also work on this. Hope this comment helps!

AmazingMech2418 (1103)

@Whippingdot Thank you! :D

And cool! I'm excited to see how these features turn out!

sgcoder1337 (13)

@amasad apps are amazing, and it was fun too!

ruiwenge2 (1209)

Imagine if this gets trending! Lol

QuantumCodes (26)

@ruiwenge2 no more.. its trending lol

codingjlu (484)

@ruiwenge2 and... IT IS!!!!!!!!!!!

codingjlu (484)

@ruiwenge2 :D it's great working with you. You're an awesome coder. Btw we should finish our project lol

codingjlu (484)

@ruiwenge2 lol sure but could use improvements

GhostKing007 (143)

Agreed. I have added a petition. ReplTalk needs to come back. Even though there's a lot of controversy against the upvote system, I really like it, and can't imagine it being replaced with a bunch of random games with no descriptions. Nice CSS btw!

codingjlu (484)

@GhostKing007 yes and thanks for the compliment! I was going to call it a protest, but lol no that would probably be dumb so I changed it to petition xD.

Whippingdot (681)

Why are you updooting everyone who says I agree...don't do that. @codingjlu

codingjlu (484)

@Whippingdot I rarely upvote people. And I don't do that. You technically agreed with you but I didn't updoot it.

GhostKing007 (143)

@codingjlu Yeah, a petition is a much better idea than protest.

DynamicSquid (5027)

@amasad The problem with all this feedback is that I don't think it's representative of everyone that uses Replit. Other than using Replit to code, I don't the majority of people "engage" with the community when on Replit, and they would just like to browse code while skipping the community aspect. So I think Apps, being focused more on code, would actually appeal to a larger audience despite what this post claims.

Although it's kind of hard to give suggestions if we don't know what the majority of people want. Do you have data on how many people use Apps and for what reason? Or perhaps you could send out a survey in the newsletter/discord/website on why people use Replit other than to code - to interact with the community, or to browse code? What are your thoughts on a survey?

amasad (3543)

@DynamicSquid you’re right. We already see in the data that apps has wider engagement. But the you all are super important to us. You are the creators.

@tangert already made such a survey.

plscodeinjava (391)

@DynamicSquid
you just dislike upvotes don't you
kinda hypocritical for someone with 5k upvotes
anyways, i would be totally ok with apps if they still contained cycles @amasad

CSharpIsGud (1070)

@DynamicSquid apps just amplifies simple easy to churn out projects getting praised like they were divine, while more difficult ones stay at the bottom, and/or the end of their row.

DynamicSquid (5027)

@CSharpIsGud Absolutely true. In addition to sorting by new, I think they need a like/dislike system. Likes/dislikes don't affect your cycles, but they can be used to determine trending repls. Also dislikes could also be made private so only moderators can see them and better deal with spam posts.

deekhiu (1)

Don't judge apps,they're still in their beta state.

lilykhan (867)

kinda happy to see that u took the stand, gj <3

codingjlu (484)

@lilykhan lol thx yus it's the great lilykhan xD

codingjlu (484)

@lilykhan lol your the only person that does "<3" but I love it

codingjlu (484)

@lilykhan hahaha that's definitely why I voted you for friendliest friend xD (here)

lilykhan (867)

u did? aww that's so sweet of u, thx @codingjlu

codingjlu (484)

@lilykhan lol np yes CSS is amaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazing btw you have exactly 500 more cycles xD

codingjlu (484)

@lilykhan wanna CSS something together?

OldWizard209 (1638)

This is fine, but you shouldn't show the people who signed the petition, it really doesn't promote privacy.

codingjlu (484)

@OldWizard209 hmm... I don't know about that.

SilvermoonCat (458)

@codingjlu yea I was kinda mad when it showed my name right there

codingjlu (484)

@SilvermoonCat oh oops! Well, it's not as convincing if I don't show the names. I might as well could have hard coded like 367432 people have petitioned if I don't show it...

SilvermoonCat (458)

@codingjlu its fine
btw is there anyway to delete a response lol

codingjlu (484)

@SilvermoonCat no, but you could resubmit it with no message and it will override...

LeviathanCoding (1607)

ReplTalk + Replit Apps = Much Yay

codingjlu (484)

@LeviathanCoding !ReplTalk + Replit Apps = Much Yay
You think so because fullmetal has been trending for like 50 years and after apps it's still trending for like 50 years.
Downvotes

JWZ6 (715)

@codingjlu dude chill he put a lot of time on it. It's just rlly popular das all

Whippingdot (681)

Well...I don't know if I should agree or disagree. I think what replit is trying to do here is good, cause they are trying to stray the attention away from the projects that are famous already, because if a project gets popular it stays at the top for a long time, and they are trying to make people look at projects of random people so that random people can get popular and feel loved. Right now people just look at the cycles of people who made a post and will go to that post only, and they won't look at the posts made by new people, but with Apps the new people can actually get popular. The thing I don't like though is that you can't upvote comments. This is because I make funny comments sometimes and I like it being at the top so people can see it. I also think that the mods never really replace the trending part in Apps. Some other good things though are how it shows you all the fork counts, and the run counts, etc and it also has a more modern design. I am very indesicisive -_-

cuber1515 (91)

@Whippingdot I mean I guess I don't know how other people look at talk "share", but personally I always search through it the "new" filter and I think a lot of others do too, so in that way new post can definitely get more popular.

IMayBeMe (551)

@cuber1515 same I always look through the new share posts

codingjlu (484)

@Whippingdot well, I don't vote people's post based on their popularity or cycles, just on what their project is and the quality.

codingjlu (484)

@cuber1515 same, but you couldn't do that with Apps, and plus, not a lot of people actually do that.

codingjlu (484)

@Whippingdot I can't agree that random people that made projects that aren't that great should get trending, just to feel good.

Whippingdot (681)

no not people who made projects that aren't good, I mean random people who made good projects but no one saw it cause they look at trending and not at new. At least over 50 % of replit's population who use repl talk do not look at new and look at trending. Also, I didn't point out any of you directly, I just said that most people would do the things I mentioned above. @codingjlu

amasad (3543)

@Whippingdot yes that’s part of the goal. Apps is meant to be a bit more democratic and inclusive so that new people and apps get discovered too.

codingjlu (484)

@amasad well, I feel like this does the opposite; in my opinion, it's hard to find many apps on Replit, and some apps just stay there forever.

amasad (3543)

@codingjlu it hasn’t achieved its purpose yet

Whippingdot (681)

Well I don't think he can tell you...he might be able to, but keeping the plan a surprise could be better.

One thing I do think they might implement is a search, where you can filter apps, and you also might be able to press the 'new' button and the 'today' button etc. under each tag

cuber1515 (91)

I agree. I mean like just the other day I saw something on trending and it looked great, a lot of people seemed to like it, but when you looked at the code there was one line with a link linking to definitely not their game. Eventually people did realize they plagiarized. Also the whole not organized and explanations and stuff. It's just not that good. Last, like @IMayBeMe said:

I loved repl talk as it felt like a small, kind community which always would give great feedback on projects.

cuber1515 (91)

P. S. @codingjlu I can't add my petition.

codingjlu (484)

@cuber1515 k nice thx

be gone apps lolllllllll

IMayBeMe (551)

Agreed. Apps feel like scrolling through someone’s profile. Trending used to be where the coolest of the coolest projects were but now it’s just random games picked from apps. I don’t mind apps but I liked share a lot which also brought attention to repl talk and other sections such as tutorials. Bring back share

IMayBeMe (551)

@IMayBeMe in addition, I feel as though apps is very commercialized and is no different than other competitors. I loved repl talk as it felt like a small, kind community which always would give great feedback on projects.

codingjlu (484)

@IMayBeMe yeah. It takes away the specialty of ReplTalk.

AnvayMathur1 (34)

Even though one of my repls have been on the repl.it top apps, I still agree with this. I don't like replit apps because you can't add markdown and stuff like replit talk. Also, the top apps really suck because my repl has literally been there since replit apps launched. Actually. Replit trending changes but my repl has been on top apps for almost 6 months.

BIue (72)

no is a no, i refuse to use Replit app , and i will not advertise/share it

Coolkelman (1)

replit good app good i was on front page

elipie (355)

I personally think the not being able to vote on other peoples project is a good idea, because it stops cycle farming and posting for upvotes.

ruiwenge2 (1209)

@codingjlu Congrats on your first post with 100 upvotes!

LavernieChen (10)

Apps is fine, but it would be nice to have a trending.

RahulChoubey1 (186)

Maybe a blend is in order.

MikeW3 (2)

and also no rich text markdown in apps

codingjlu (484)

LOL I am not found because my cycles are 404

RhinoRunner (864)

I agree. To be honest, I don't see the point to having both Apps and Talk, and Talk is the better of the two, so why would overrunning Talk with Apps be useful in any way?

codeitfast (57)

yeah, I have a problem with trending. It basically takes advantage of your brain's reward system to keep you on the site longer.

codeitfast (57)

@codeitfast I'm mainly against liking projects, or the idea of it.

plscodeinjava (391)

wut
why does this have 70 upvotes
ahhhhhh
this might actually beat javacraft
not fair > <

codingjlu (484)

@plscodeinjava why not fair? js is better anyway lol

TonyWu4 (4)

@codingjlu uh oh js vs. java war go brrr

codingjlu (484)

@TonyWu4 yeeeeeeeees I do java too lol that was my second lang guess what's my first

plscodeinjava (391)

@codingjlu NOOOOOOOOOOOOO not fair > <

ruiwenge2 (1209)

@plscodeinjava com’on 90 upvotes is still a lot

plscodeinjava (391)

@ruiwenge2
still
the creator of down with replit apps probably made it in like an hour

plscodeinjava (391)

@ruiwenge2 omg it has 100 upvotes bruhhh

ruiwenge2 (1209)

@plscodeinjava most people aren’t upvoting because of the project itself (although the css is awesome)
they’re upvoting because they agree with @codingjlu’s opinion

plscodeinjava (391)

@ruiwenge2 true! i cant wait, it will be my first ever 100 upvotes :)

ruiwenge2 (1209)

@plscodeinjava lemme tell u, it feels great =D

ruiwenge2 (1209)

@plscodeinjava I just remembered I didn’t upvote it

I’m gonna do that

ruiwenge2 (1209)

@plscodeinjava I’m just sad that my coding platform didn’t make 150
