Don't do it, Replit!
This current state only applies to explorers.
The first time I saw Replit apps, I knew it wasn't going to be good.
For all explorers, you will now see that the trending is being replaced with the top Replit apps. And I don't like it. Not one bit.
- People can't vote on your posts
- It's much harder to find good repls
- No more long descriptions
- It's not as organized
- Trending projects stays on for too long
- It's easier to plagarize
- There's not that great triumph when your app goes trending
Anyways, although this is currently only for explorers, due to past experience, it will soon apply to everyone.
And that's very, very, very, bad.
Repl Talk is good. You don't have to mess it up.
If you agree, you can petition in the app I made just for this, and we can show it to Replit.
Disclaimer: I'm not trying to offend anyone (Replit) and do not have bad intentions. But I do not support what Replit is doing with trending at all.
IMO this CSS is amaaaaaaaaaaaazing.
Tip: re-submit your entry to edit your petition.
We have succeeded!!!!!! Trending is share again!!
According to amasad:
Hey everyone — thanks for the feedback. It’s really valuable. Apps should feel as good as Talk and even better when it comes to sharing repls. It shouldn’t be seen as a downgrade. If that’s not the case then we have more work to do. For now we’ll pause the roll out of the Apps trending feed until we address your most pressing concerns.
To be clear Replit is Replit, whether talk or apps it’s the same site. The reputation, profile, and friends you built on this site will be there for you regardless of the product updates.
Our mission is to make programming more accessible, fun, and social. We want our site to inspire creativity and be a healthy community where people come to learn and build. And we’ll continue to iterate to make it better and better for everyone.
thanks? I don't know if I should say that cause you guys worked really hard for Apps, and the design is awesome...But yea...I guess so. I hope you improve it a ton - maybe not cycles, but at least updooting comments so that more people can see them. Apps specifically do not need to have an upvote feature, cause that will be the same as the trending page on repl talk. I like what you are doing with 'Replit's picks rn anyway cause lots of random awesome apps get picked there @amasad
@amasad I personally think a good way to improve Apps would be to make it more searchable and to allow it to have a system similar to upvoting so the best repls get more views and the simpler ones that aren't as significant get fewer views (since they are more likely for small-level sharing rather than all of Repl.it). There should also be ways for Repl.it-ers to promote repls shared on Apps, I think, so that lesser-known good repls get more views as well. And a way to view the newest repls like on Talk as well. Also, the description size limit should be longer, I think, as well. I like the "Replit Picks" section of Apps too, but there should also be ways for Repl.it-ers to suggest repls to be picked, I think.
@AmazingMech2418 all great suggestions.
I’m a bit worried about adding upvoting thought because of all the negative issues that come with it like farming and abuse. I think runs & forks together are more honest metrics because they indicate that something is truly useful or interesting. Don’t you think?
Will fix the description issue.
What do you mean by promote? Like pay to advertise?
@amasad Thank you!
I was thinking that there should be some way to show that you like the repl since view-based metrics could possibly lead to clickbait.
And by promote, I mean some way for something like a "recently liked repls" thing on the profile page, or some way for Repl.it-ers to almost "curate" repls themselves so that the repls are more visible.
@amasad i honestly would much rather have upvoting, and i think most of the repl community agrees with me on this one. it just feels so good to get upvotes, when runs don't really tell if someone actually likes the game.
how would forks be a metric?
I personally would like apps MUCH MORE if they had some form of upvoting, and honestly, getting upvotes is the big reason i keep making new games...
@amasad Could Repl Talk Share be replaced with Apps (it should go back to Explore in my opinion) but have all of the same features? I mean the exact markdown thing, the ability to change the published announcement title from the repl, search capability without special commands, an A-Z alphabetical tag browsing list that loads all at once without the tap of a button, and a way to revert to the classic Repl.it Talk Share interface. There should also be some sort of way to view old classic Repl.it Talk Share posts without migrating. (a sort of "compatibility mode")
I think what ch1ck3n said about the amount of upvotes is a cool idea...but not really perfect. I would be happier without upvotes, and I am happy you also think that too. I do like cycles though unfortunately and so I hope you can implement some way to still get cycles through your apps and not only through ask when you replace repl talk... @amasad
Also @AmazingMech2418 really good ideas bro. You haven't been active recently and I am glad that you are still striving to help the community... I like all the suggestions in your post. There should be someway for the community to choose which apps should be shown on the front page too. So like trending, but not only will those good apps be there, but new apps should also be there, like maybe a random 2.
Also @amasad I don't remember the link of the app that I commented on with my feature requests that you replied to, but if you have the link can you send it? You probably won't so the only thing I remember @AmazingMech2418 is that I asked for a search capability with the tags and he said they were already working on it. I asked if you could like search through the apps and search with the tags and combine tags etc. I also asked if you could filter a tag by the apps released 'today', 'this week', and 'trending' or something else... He said they were working on this / would also work on this. Hope this comment helps!
Agreed. I have added a petition. ReplTalk needs to come back. Even though there's a lot of controversy against the upvote system, I really like it, and can't imagine it being replaced with a bunch of random games with no descriptions. Nice CSS btw!
@amasad The problem with all this feedback is that I don't think it's representative of everyone that uses Replit. Other than using Replit to code, I don't the majority of people "engage" with the community when on Replit, and they would just like to browse code while skipping the community aspect. So I think Apps, being focused more on code, would actually appeal to a larger audience despite what this post claims.
Although it's kind of hard to give suggestions if we don't know what the majority of people want. Do you have data on how many people use Apps and for what reason? Or perhaps you could send out a survey in the newsletter/discord/website on why people use Replit other than to code - to interact with the community, or to browse code? What are your thoughts on a survey?
@CSharpIsGud Absolutely true. In addition to sorting by new, I think they need a like/dislike system. Likes/dislikes don't affect your cycles, but they can be used to determine trending repls. Also dislikes could also be made private so only moderators can see them and better deal with spam posts.
This is fine, but you shouldn't show the people who signed the petition, it really doesn't promote privacy.
Well...I don't know if I should agree or disagree. I think what replit is trying to do here is good, cause they are trying to stray the attention away from the projects that are famous already, because if a project gets popular it stays at the top for a long time, and they are trying to make people look at projects of random people so that random people can get popular and feel loved. Right now people just look at the cycles of people who made a post and will go to that post only, and they won't look at the posts made by new people, but with Apps the new people can actually get popular. The thing I don't like though is that you can't upvote comments. This is because I make funny comments sometimes and I like it being at the top so people can see it. I also think that the mods never really replace the trending part in Apps. Some other good things though are how it shows you all the fork counts, and the run counts, etc and it also has a more modern design. I am very indesicisive -_-
no not people who made projects that aren't good, I mean random people who made good projects but no one saw it cause they look at trending and not at new. At least over 50 % of replit's population who use repl talk do not look at new and look at trending. Also, I didn't point out any of you directly, I just said that most people would do the things I mentioned above. @codingjlu
Well I don't think he can tell you...he might be able to, but keeping the plan a surprise could be better.
One thing I do think they might implement is a search, where you can filter apps, and you also might be able to press the 'new' button and the 'today' button etc. under each tag
I agree. I mean like just the other day I saw something on trending and it looked great, a lot of people seemed to like it, but when you looked at the code there was one line with a link linking to definitely not their game. Eventually people did realize they plagiarized. Also the whole not organized and explanations and stuff. It's just not that good. Last, like @IMayBeMe said:
I loved repl talk as it felt like a small, kind community which always would give great feedback on projects.
Agreed. Apps feel like scrolling through someone’s profile. Trending used to be where the coolest of the coolest projects were but now it’s just random games picked from apps. I don’t mind apps but I liked share a lot which also brought attention to repl talk and other sections such as tutorials. Bring back share
Even though one of my repls have been on the repl.it top apps, I still agree with this. I don't like replit apps because you can't add markdown and stuff like replit talk. Also, the top apps really suck because my repl has literally been there since replit apps launched. Actually. Replit trending changes but my repl has been on top apps for almost 6 months.
why does this have 70 upvotes
this might actually beat javacraft
not fair > <
