This tutorial will cover the Looks category and Sound category blocks
In these tutorials, "default" will mean what the block looks like in the pallete (before changing block's inputs.)

Looks category blocks
These blocks will change whatever sprite looks like in some way (some can be used for the backdrop too.) Here are the blocks:
So now, let the explanations begin!
Say __ for _ seconds
This block will make a speech bubble appear over the selected sprite. If there is nothing in the input for text, no speech bubble will appear. The defaults are:
- Text to say: "Hello!"
- Seconds to say it: 2
This block will make the speech bubble appear over the selected sprite. The default text is "Hello!" The speech bubble will stay until one of the followinng happens
- One of the following blocks is activated
- say __
- say __ for ___ seconds
- think __
- think __ for ___ seconds
- If you want to remove the speech bubble, then make one of the above blocks with the text input is blank.
Think __ for _ seconds
This block will make a thought bubble appear over the selected sprite. The defaults are:
- String in thought bubble: "Hmm..."
- Number of seconds thought: 2
This block will make a thought bubble appear over the selected sprite. The default string is "Hmm...". If you want to remove the thought bubble, then see Say __.
Switch costume to __
This will the selected sprite's
costume switch to whatever costume you choose. The default costume to switch to is the first costume in the list of costumes.
This block has no inputs and the costume will switch to whatever costume comes next in the list of costumes.
Switch backdrop to __
This will switch the
backdrop to the backdrop you choose. The default backdrop is whatever backdrop comes first in the list of backdrops.
This block has no inputs and the backdrop will switch to whatever backdrop comes next in the list of backdrops.
change size by __
This will change the size of the sprite by a certain amount. The default is 10.
set size to __ %
This block will set the size percentage of the selected sprite. The default percentage for this block is 100.
The seven graphic effects in scratch
Before we go further with the blocks, I just needed to point out the seven graphic effects in Scratch. Here goes.
- color (the overall color of the sprite\backdrop)
- fisheye (bulge around center of sprite\backdrop)
- whirl (vortex)
- pixelate (rough size of pixels)
- mosaic (copies of sprite\backdrop evenly laid out in rows and collumns)
- brightness (the brightness of your sprite\backdrop)
- ghost (transparency)
change __ effect by _
This will change a certain effect for your sprite\backdrop by a certain amount. The default inputs are:
- Graphic effect: color
- Amount: 25
set __ to __
This block will set a certain graphic effect to a certain number. The default inputs are:
- graphic effect: color
- amount: 0
clear graphic effects
This block has no inputs and will clear all graphical effects.
This block has no inputs and will make the sprite visible.
This block has no inputs and will make the sprite invisible.
go to __ layer
This block will make the sprite go to the front or back
layer. The default layer input is front.
go __ _ layers
This block will make a sprite go forward or backward a certain number of layers. The defaults are:
- Forward or backward: forward
- Number of layers: 1
Looks reporter blocks
Sound category blocks
These are the sound category blocks:
So yeah, I will start explaining the sound category blocks
Play sound __ until done
This will play a sound, and the rest of the code in the
script will not run until the sound is done playing. The default sound is whatever comes first in the list of sounds.
Play sound __
This will play a sound. The default sound is whatever comes first in the list of sounds.
Stop all sounds
The name of the block says it all. All sounds will be stopped.
Sound effects will effect sounds. Here are the two current sound effects
- Pitch (how high or low the pitch of a sound is)
- Pan left/right (moving the sound closer to the beginning or end of sound)
Change __ effect by __
This block will change a certain sound effect by a certain amount. The default inputs are:
- Effect: pitch
- Amount: 10
Set __ effect to __
This block will st an effect to a certain amount. The default inputs are:
- Effect: pitch
- Amount: 100
Sound reporter block: volume
The only sound reporter block is volume. You can use it for operators and other stuff (explained in later tutorials).
