Unit testing is often used in professional environments to see how sturdy a bit of code is. If you're doing a smaller project (i.e. one that not many people will see) then unit testing is pointless. But, if your project is fragile and shouldn't ever have any errors, then it's great for seeing how your code reacts to certain conditions.
