Git is an association of it's own, if repl.it were to add a cli for git they would have to ask and get git's approval, which is also a huge and long process, so it's unlike that will happen.

Ehnryu

@JosephSanthosh okay just really wanted it

Profile icon
gibbsfreenergy

Same here! A combination of Git and Repl.it would be so cool and useful. @He1ios

Profile icon
Coder100

um they do have git..
Hit ctrl+shift+s and type in:

git commit -m "hi"

@He1ios

Profile icon
gibbsfreenergy

That's not part of cli though which was the question. @Coder100

Profile icon
Coder100

yes it is, it's part of the shell, which is a CLI if you forgot @JosephSanthosh

Profile icon
Coder100

where else would you use git smh @JosephSanthosh

Profile icon
gibbsfreenergy

in github??? @Coder100

Profile icon
Coder100
Profile icon
Coder100

Bruh do you even know what git is smh @JosephSanthosh

Profile icon
Coder100

And getting git's approval? It's open source! Repl.it is already using it behind the scenes with repl from repo @JosephSanthosh

Profile icon
SixBeeps

@Coder100 @JosephSanthosh You both know they're talking about GitHub, not Git, correct? gh != git

Profile icon
gibbsfreenergy

Smh, git is an association, since repl.it already has a cli for git apparently, that means repl.it has already received git's approval. Do you know what is business, to have a product of another company in yours you need to have their approval or that will be copyright! The code which people put in github is open source, not the company. @Coder100

Profile icon
gibbsfreenergy

Exactly!!! That's why I'm just like wondering what is @Coder100 saying, pretty off topic! Thanks @SixBeeps

Profile icon
SixBeeps

@JosephSanthosh I'm wondering what you're saying as well. You don't need Git's approval because 1.) They're not associated in any way to GitHub, and 2.) They're an open-source group?!

Profile icon
SixBeeps

@JosephSanthosh Git is in no way a business.

Profile icon
gibbsfreenergy
Profile icon
SixBeeps

@JosephSanthosh That's github.

Profile icon
gibbsfreenergy

Yes and github uses git, there for git is a business under github!

So git and github have ties with each other to use their softwares and/or products.

@SixBeeps @Coder100 Sorry @He1ios for the spam you have been receiving!

Profile icon

@JosephSanthosh My Minecraft mod that I made uses Java, so therefore I must own Java!

Profile icon
gibbsfreenergy

Haha nice joke! @SixBeeps

Profile icon
gibbsfreenergy

You use Java, so you're the audience/customers of Java. But if you made a company and you want Java to be a code in your company for people to use, then you have to have ties with Java. That is why there aren't so many IDE's. Aren't you a college student? Shouldn't you be knowing this? @SixBeeps

@JosephSanthosh
Companies need not say a single word to Oracle.

And aren't you a Stanford student? Shouldn't you know how licenses work?

Profile icon
gibbsfreenergy

Haha! I am taking Stanford courses, not necessarily a student. Btw I'm in High School not college. Did you not see the Must in the picture you sent? In order to use the Can section you have to do the Must section.
@SixBeeps

Profile icon
wh0

@JosephSanthosh GitHub has issued a public license which grants that approval. See here: https://github.com/cli/cli/blob/trunk/LICENSE

Profile icon
SixBeeps

@JosephSanthosh Yeah, as long as you do the must you can do the can. No "ties" with Oracle or anything.
Also GG on taking college courses already. Kinda wish I could have done that.

Profile icon

@wh0 (Perms of the MIT license for future reference)

Profile icon
gibbsfreenergy

Yeah that's what I meant! Thanks! Well at least you're doing well in college! I'm barely able to survive in my first year of high school! @SixBeeps

Profile icon
SixBeeps

@JosephSanthosh Oh you're on your first year of HS. Good luck, and don't worry, you'll find out everything in time.

Profile icon
SixBeeps

@JosephSanthosh Btw, sorry for arguing. I just had my phone break on me so I ended up releasing my anger on you.

Profile icon
gibbsfreenergy

Thank you so much! Sorry for like arguing back, I'm in debates so I barely notice when I'm arguing! Thank you once again and have a great day. @SixBeeps

Wait I’m confused, why would git need to get involved? They already approved the software for GitHub so wouldn’t the decision be GitHub’s? And isn’t the CLI open for anyone to [email protected]

Profile icon
CodeLongAndPros

@JosephSanthosh “git’s approval” well Git is open source, so…
And if replit asked, Linus would probably shoot it down.

Profile icon
CodeLongAndPros
Profile icon
CodeLongAndPros

@agent9002 Git is made by Linus Torvalds. GitHub hosts Git remote “storage”.

Profile icon
AstOwOlfo

Okay but how are they relevant here? @CodeLongAndPros

Profile icon
CodeLongAndPros

@agent9002 Because JosephSanthosh is saying “Microsoft owns git”

Profile icon
AstOwOlfo

why'd u tell me then lol? @CodeLongAndPros

Profile icon
CodeLongAndPros

@agent9002 you are in the thread?

Profile icon
AstOwOlfo

yeah but i didnt say microsoft owns git, u tagged me specifically for that @CodeLongAndPros

Profile icon
CodeLongAndPros

@agent9002
More properly:

Wait I’m confused, why would git need to get involved? They already approved the software for GitHub so wouldn’t the decision be GitHub’s? And isn’t the CLI open for anyone to [email protected]

“Approved the use of”

@agent9002 What is that.

Profile icon
AstOwOlfo
Profile icon
CodeLongAndPros

@agent9002 ok why tho

Profile icon
AstOwOlfo

uh its just a joke bro there isnt rlly any reason for it @CodeLongAndPros

Profile icon
gibbsfreenergy

Why is microsoft suddenly in this? @CodeLongAndPros @agent9002 @SixBeeps

Profile icon
AstOwOlfo

looks like u deleted some msgs that claimed microsoft owned github? @JosephSanthosh

Profile icon
gibbsfreenergy

me? what no? Go and watch @SixBeeps youtube video of this debate. @agent9002

Profile icon
AstOwOlfo

ye but this was afterwards, no? @JosephSanthosh

Profile icon
gibbsfreenergy

afterwards? @agent9002

Profile icon
CodeLongAndPros

@JosephSanthosh You do know Miscorosft own Github

Profile icon
AstOwOlfo

ugh look, this is going nowhere, there's no point discussing it anymore tbh @CodeLongAndPros

Profile icon
gibbsfreenergy

Ye, i know that, but like how is that related to git? @CodeLongAndPros

Profile icon
gibbsfreenergy

Yea, the poor person who created this post. @agent9002 @CodeLongAndPros Did u guys see @SixBeeps youtube video about this?

Profile icon
Ehnryu
Profile icon
Ehnryu

@JosephSanthosh @agent9002 @Coder100 I personally support joseph because github uses git to collab with it's repositories so technically github does own git because they made it for their repositories's commits

Profile icon
gibbsfreenergy

Thanks! @He1ios

Profile icon
AstOwOlfo

No, I don’t think so. Git’s service can be used commercially and they already gave the rights to GitHub to produce that software so Git can be ignored in this case. Responsibility belongs to GitHub which I’m 99% sure are providing the CLI to businesses at no charge but I’d have to double check their stance on it.

The argument with Java and Oracle that was made was a good anecdote for this.
@He1ios

Profile icon
Ehnryu

@agent9002 yes but didn't github start git which means they have the best claim to own git @JosephSanthosh what do u think?

Profile icon
AstOwOlfo

How is Git relevant? They distribute their software freely. The code is open-source, anyone can use and modify it without needing any additional permission. Directly from their website: Git is a free and open source distributed version control system designed to handle everything from small to very large projects with speed and efficiency. Git's permission is not relevant at all here, after reading more into it, what Joseph is saying is not exactly correct. @He1ios

Profile icon
Ehnryu

@agent9002 So... this went from wanting git cli to this lol

Profile icon
gibbsfreenergy

So sorry about this mess bro. @He1ios

Profile icon
gibbsfreenergy

It's my bad. @He1ios

Profile icon
Ehnryu

@JosephSanthosh np it's kinda fun

Profile icon
gibbsfreenergy

Same, I love debating. @He1ios
