Developer Spotlights : A Cactus!

Good morning/evening my fellow replers! This week, we sat down and had a chat with one of our most active community members - @CodingCactus who's been posting a lot of good quality stuff on repl talk. I don't think we need any more introductions, so let's get right to it.

@TheDrone7 : Hello! Nice to finally be able to meet you. Here goes my first question - How would you describe yourself?

@CodingCactus : I would say that I am someone who is very interested in coding and trying to learn as much as I can about stuff like that. I am pretty impatient, so if I gave an idea to code something, I will normally code non-stop until it is done (if I can do it in one session).

@TheDrone7 : Hmmm, interesting. Well then, why don't you go ahead and introduce yourself too?

@CodingCactus : Sure, my name is Nathaniel, I am 14 years old. I live in England and have been coding python for about one and a half years.

@TheDrone7 : That's nice. So, how did you get into coding?

@CodingCactus : Well in school (when I was 10 or 11) they have computing as one of the subjects. This is where I was introduced to scratch and started making projects there.

@TheDrone7 : Ah, and how did you advance further?

@CodingCactus : I actually didn't really do anything else for about year, but when I went into year 8 in school, they started teaching the basics of html, just having a basic webpage that we had to copy through a tutorial telling us what each of the tags and everything does. Then next year is where I started doing python and was introduced to repl.it. I just really liked python and its relative simplicity to start learning. I just kept adding and adding to my python skills with lots of personal projects and that is how I ended up where I am now.

@TheDrone7 : Who and how exactly introduced you to repl.it?

@CodingCactus : It was how the whole class was taught python. The teacher set up a classroom and set tasks for us to do. So basically I learnt all of my python using repl.it.

@TheDrone7 : That's amazing! You've been making and sharing many great stuff on repl talk. But, what are some of your favorite projects/posts?

@CodingCactus : My project that I am most proud of/had fun making was my first main post. It was the Tic Tac Toe game. I like that one the most, is because it is where I was first introduced to 2d arrays (by Coder100), and learnt lots of useful things that I now use in most of my python projects now. It was my first really big project that I did mostly all on my own I would say.

Editor's note : Below are some of @CodingCactus's projects.

Tic Tac Toe

Typing Test

Cactus Sim

Jumpy Cactus (In development)

@TheDrone7 : Well, what other things are you interested in?

@CodingCactus : As in not coding? If I'm honest there isn't much I do apart from coding lol, but I like to play table tennis and obviously I am quite interested in cactii!
Also, I really like math, electronics, physics and chemistry. Pretty much anything with calculations are really interesting and fun. I don't like the subjects where there isn't a definite answer, like English and RS.

@TheDrone7 : That's actually pretty cool! I'm the same to be honest when it comes to studies lol. Well, any last pieces of knowledge that you would like to share with everyone?

@CodingCactus : ermmmm...... I don't think so lol :)

@TheDrone7 : Well, that's it then! Thank you.

@CodingCactus : Thank you for wanting to interview me! As you can tell I'm not that good at talking to people lol :)

That's it for this week's developer spotlight! Again, if you want to be featured in one of these, keep posting amazing stuff on repl talk and keep an eye out for any emails or discord DMs!

See you all again next week with another amazing developer!

Hello Nathaniel who is 14 years old and comes from England noice to see this interview!

Was it done on discord or on something like zoom or did you actually meet each other( I don’t think you did)

TheDrone7 (1900)

We obviously wouldn't meet each other, specially under the current circumstances, we only e-meet them. I prefer doing this via Discord as it is yet another platform where we can quickly get in touch with our community members or they can get in touch with us.

Bookie0 (6281)

Yeah i thought so thanks for replying! :) @TheDrone7

I love how this spotlight entirely was made for the reason that his projects were plagiarised about 10 times in like 5 minutes so you just amde one for him. Also congrats cactus :)

TheDrone7 (1900)

That wasn't the only reason though. @eekboi

eekboi (285)

@TheDrone7 looks like you got me

CodingCactus (4366)

@eekboi thanks, I didn't realise that that was a reason for choosing someone for a dev spotlight?

eekboi (285)

@CodingCactus I was joking about that, that was one of the reasons you were spotlighted though lol.

TheDrone7 (1900)

It's another way if saying your posts were so good that they kept getting plagiarized this frequently. @CodingCactus

CodingCactus (4366)

@TheDrone7 ahhh, ok. It was actually quite funny with some where they said they had updated it or something and then I said that it was exactly the same (I know my code) but they kept arguing that it was theirs. Then like 2 minutes later, they posted another of my post saying that was also theirs and updated.

eekboi (285)

@CodingCactus I saw that lol, i was one of the first to report it. Is the post still up? @TheDrone7

TheDrone7 (1900)

I've taken care of those. @eekboi

CodingCactus (4366)

@DynamicSquid thanks, I'm pretty dull aren't I lol

DynamicSquid (4919)

@CodingCactus well no, that's kinda sounds like my life xD
